A new U.N. report says the risk of global economic recession is rising. The report, by the U.N. Conference On Trade and Development, says international trade is expected to slow and the world economy to cool off. Lisa Schlein reports for VOA at the launch of the report in
World economic growth was robust last year. The report notes more than 100 economies achieved three percent growth or more. And growth in developing countries rose on average nearly seven percent.
But, the U.N. Conference On Trade and Development says there is a clear danger of the world economy coming to a near standstill in 2008. The report says this will hit many poor nations hard, slow world trade and put an end to the boom in commodity prices.
Heiner Flassbeck is an official at the U.N. agency. He says the major uncertainties for 2008 arise from the

지난해 세계 경제 성장은 견실했었다. 그 보고서에 의하면 100 여 개가 넘는 경제국들이 3 퍼센트 성장 또는 그 이상을 달성했다고 나타내고 있다. 그리고 개발도상국은 평균적으로 거의 8 퍼센트 올랐다. 그 보고서에 의하면 아프리카는 거의 6 퍼센트 성장했고 올해 이 수치를 초과할 것을 예상된다고 한다.
그러나 유엔 무역 개발협의회는 2008년에는 거의 정지상태로 향하는 세계경제의 명백한 위험이 존재한다고 말한다. 그 보고서에 따르면 이것은 많은 빈국들에게 심각한 타격을 입힐 것이고 세계 무역을 활기없게 만들고 급격한 물가상승으로 끝날 것이라고 말한다.

플라스백은 세계는 더 이상 세계 경제의 유일한 기관차 존재로서 미국에 의존할 수 없다고 말한다. 그는 일본과 유럽은 이러한 역할을 인계받기 위해서 보다 많은 일을 해야만 한다고 말한다. 그러나 그는 세계 성장 엔진으로써 미국을 대신할 만큼 충분히 강력한 다른 선진 경제국들의 징후는 아직 없다고 덧붙여 말한다.
그는 세계 경제는 만일 미국이 경기침체에 빠지게 된다면 극심한 타격을 입게 될지도 모른다고 말한다.
”경기침체는 실제적인 위협이지만 아무도 그것이 현실화될지 아니면 바로 지금 이 때인지 말할 수 없다.”그는 덧붙였다. “말씀드린 대로, 그것은 이른바 서브 프라임 주위의 아직도 존재하는 불확실성의 결과인데 그 이유는 아직도 아무도 실제로 얼마나 많은 추가적인 금전적 가치가 탕감되어져야 할 것인지 아니면 미국과 그 밖의 나라에서 전체적으로 경제시스템에 있어 얼마나 많은 추가적인 손실이 발생할 것인지 모른다.”
그 유엔 보고서는 주택 가격의 15% 하락은 소비자 수요에 영향을 미치기 쉬울 것 같고 미국 경제의 사실상의 정지상태를 가져오는 미국 성장율 2% 감소를 불러올지도 모른다고 언급하고 있다.
알 수 있는 것은 미국달러의 하락은 수출 가격을 낮추고 수입가격을 높임으로써 미국에 이득이 되고 있다. 그러나 미국달러 가치하락은 다른 경제국들을 손상시키고 있음을 의미한다.
그 보고서에 의하면 정부들은 달러의 패퇴를 피하기 위해서 공동 대응을 해야만 한다고 한다. 경고하기를 빠르고 무질서한 하락은 전세계에 걸친 경기침체를 불러일으킬 수도 있다고 한다.
