안녕하세요. 매일 제 글을 읽으시고 영어를 들으시는 분들께 감사 드립니다.
벌써 2008년의 2일씩이나 지나가고 있군요.
저만 그런지 모르겠지만 시간이란 참 빨리 지나가는 것 같습니다.
영업도 그렇고 프로그램 언어를 배우는 것도 그렇고 사람들과 좋은 관계를 맺는다는 것도 그렇고 모든 것이 짧지 않은 시간과 끊임없는 노력이 수반되어야 하는 일들인 것 같습니다.
제가 바라는 것은 열심히 듣는 훈련부터 하시고 듣다 보면 저절로 기본적인 패턴이라는 것이 입에 붙는 것을 느끼는 때가 올 겁니다.
그럼 말하시면서 영작도 해보시면 될 듯 합니다.
열심히 하시길… 10년 전에는 영어가 일상 삶에서 차지하는 비중이 그리 크지 않았습니다. 그러나 10년이 지난 지금은 상당한 영향을 주고 있지요. 그럼 다음 10년은 어떨까요?...

Tourists Roll Up Their Sleeves
여행객들이 소매를 걷어 올리다.

Historical tourists take leisurely trips across the country and pull off the highway to read roadside historic signs and photograph monuments. And they meander into tiny historical museums in small towns along the way.
There are also adventure tourists who don't just look at stuff but do things, strenuous things. They climb mountains, hunt animals, hike across deserts, scuba dive, maybe go to sports camps. A couple of tourists have even paid big money to ride with astronauts into space.
But one of the most curious forms of tourism is called agritourism. People pay rural families for the chance to move in for a few days and learn firsthand what farm life is all about. The families make a few dollars, and the agritourists learn such skills as making butter, slopping pigs, cleaning out horse stalls, even cutting Christmas trees and baking cookies.

Maybe that tourist would change his mind if he stopped back at the farm at planting or harvest time, but he came away impressed, for sure. By the way, some parts of a farm visit — hog butchering and deerskinning, for example — are strictly optional activities!

역사적인 여행객들은 느긋하게 전국을 횡단하며 여행을 하고 길가의 역사적으로 유명한 표시들을 해독하고 기념물들을 사진 찍기 위해서 고속도로를 벗어난다. 그리고 그들은 길을 따라서 있는 조그마한 마을들에 있는 역사적인 박물관들을 헤매고 다닌다.
보는 것에 만족하지 않고 격렬한 것과 같은 하는 것을 좋아하는 모험심이 강한 여행객들도 있다. 그들은 산을 오르고, 사냥하고 걸어서 사막을 횡단하고, 아마도 스포츠 캠프에 가서 스쿠버 다이빙한다. 심지어 관광객들의 한 쌍은 우주여행을 하기 위해 엄청난 돈을 지불했다.
그러나 관광의 가장 흥미로운 유형 중의 하나는 농촌 관광이다. 사람들은 몇 일 동안 이사오고 농촌 생활의 모든 것을 직접 체험하여 배울 수 있는 기회를 얻기 위해서 시골가정에 돈을 지불한다.
그 가족들은 약간의 달러를 벌고 농촌관광객들은 버터만들기, 돼지들에게 밥주기, 마구간 청소하기, 심지어 크리스마스 나무 자르기, 쿠키 굽기 같은 기술들을 배운다.
그러한 잡일들의 마지막은 특히 많은 사람들이 중서부 농촌 가정으로 이주하고 막 지난 휴가기간 동안 특히 인기있었다.
종종 어른 농촌관광객들은 그들의 아이들을 실물교육의 일환으로 같이 데리고 간다. 이것 좀 봐 ,얘들아, 이것이 실제 모든 일들이다!
미주리주의 센트루이스라는 큰 도시로부터 온 한 농촌관광객은 AP통신에 말했다.
”나는 농부들이 겨울에 농작물도 없고 할일 도 없기 때문에 편히 살 거라고 생각했다. 지금은 나는 그들이 여름보다도 겨울에 더 열심히 일하는 것을 안다.”
아마도 저 여행객은 그가 심고 거두는 때 농장에서 뒤돌아 본다면 그의 생각을 바꿀지도 모르지만 그는 확실히 인상을 받고 떠나갔다.
부연하자면 농장 방문의 어떤 일들, 예를 들면 어떤 부분은 돼지 도살 그리고 사슴가죽 벗기기 같은 것은 단연코 선택 가능한 활동들이다.!
