다양한 색상의 꽃들로 장식된12칸의 화물기차가 이른 화요일 아침 북한으로 군사분계선이 그어지기 전에 남한의 마지막 역인 여기 도라산 역에 정차해 있었다.
화물들은 주로 가난한 북한의 파괴된 도로와 기반시설들을 복구하기 위해 사용될 무거운 돌들이었다.
한국 철도공사 사장인 이철은 승무원들에게 오늘은 매우 특별한 업무를 하므로 각별히 신경써 주길 당부했다.
북한으로 들어갔다가 다시 돌아오는 약 20킬로미터의 화요일 기차 여정은 적지 않은 57년 동안에 두 코리아 사이에 첫 정기화물열차서비스의 시작을 상징한다.
두 나라는 전문적으로는 1950년 북한의 남한 침공 이래로 교전중으로 남아있다. 1953년 잠정적인 휴전으로 전투가 중단되었다.
북남간 유대는 2000년 역사적인 정상회담이래로 생기가 넘쳐왔다.
